How council tax bands work
Every council sets a Band D charge. The other bands are fixed fractions of it, set by law:
| Band | 1991 value | Ratio to D | At the £2,392 average |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | up to £40,000 | 6/9 | £1,594.67 |
| B | £40,001 to £52,000 | 7/9 | £1,860.44 |
| C | £52,001 to £68,000 | 8/9 | £2,126.22 |
| D | £68,001 to £88,000 | 9/9 | £2,392.00 |
| E | £88,001 to £120,000 | 11/9 | £2,923.56 |
| F | £120,001 to £160,000 | 13/9 | £3,455.11 |
| G | £160,001 to £320,000 | 15/9 | £3,986.67 |
| H | over £320,000 | 18/9 | £4,784.00 |
The average Band D council tax in England for 2026/27 is £2,392 (MHCLG statistics, March 2026), including adult social care and parish precepts. Your own council's figure may be quite different.
